Zach Yadegari, the 19-year-old co-founder of the calorie-counting app Cal AI, has launched a new AI startup — Persona. The company raised $10 million in a round led by Vine Ventures; also participating were Z Fellows founder Cory Levy, who works with early-stage startups, and investment firm Collective Global.

TechCrunch reported the news on October 8, 2026. Persona is a personal AI assistant startup: the team is simultaneously building a software service and a wearable device. The startup is already serving beta users while preparing its hardware product for market.

Funding Round: $10 Million

The new round totaled $10 million. It was led by venture fund Vine Ventures; participants included Z Fellows founder Cory Levy and Collective Global. The funding was announced on October 8. The participant list combines two categories of investors: individual entrepreneur Cory Levy and two organizations — Vine Ventures and Collective Global. Yadegari is an entrepreneur with a track record of rapid growth in his previous startup: together with his co-founders, he built Cal AI from scratch, and the app reached more than $30 million in annual revenue in under two years — that is, it hit the figure before its second anniversary.

The Product: Free Beta and a $179 Wristband

Persona currently operates in two forms. The first is a free beta: users send text messages via iMessage and converse with an AI assistant. The beta has already attracted several thousand users; no dedicated app download is required — messaging via iMessage is enough. Because the service works directly through text messages, installing a separate app is unnecessary. The second is the Persona Band wearable wristband. The device price has been announced in advance — $179; sales are planned for December. On its official website, the company presents Persona Band as "personal intelligence on the wrist." Pre-orders have generated five-figure revenue — that is, tens of thousands of dollars: the company began accepting customer payments before the public launch.

From Cal AI to Persona: A Brief History

Yadegari's previous project was Cal AI, a calorie-counting mobile app. In March 2026, MyFitnessPal acquired it for an undisclosed sum — the parties did not announce the deal value. At the time of the deal, the app was less than two years old and had already surpassed $30 million in annual revenue. After the sale, Yadegari and his co-founders joined the MyFitnessPal team. Three months later — in June 2026 — Yadegari left the company and started working on Persona. By October, the startup had closed a $10 million funding round.

Privacy Architecture

The most questioned topic for wearable AI devices is privacy. Persona has made several concrete decisions here. The wristband does not listen to its surroundings continuously: it activates only when a button is pressed or the wrist is sharply flicked. This approach differs from ambient AI devices built on always-on listening. The AI model runs not on the device itself but in the company's private cloud. User data is encrypted in two stages: both in transit and while stored in company systems. The system has protections against phishing ("deceptive email") attacks and prompt injection. Purchases made through external payment providers such as Stripe Link require separate user confirmation — no payment is processed until the user approves it. On the official website, privacy is presented as the product's foundation: SOC 2 Type I certification, the AES-256 encryption standard, and the user's ability to independently delete their data are listed.
