On October 22, 2026, Anthropic announced it was donating the Agent Skills open standard to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), an organization under the Linux Foundation. The move gives the standard a neutral, community-governed home. Agent Skills has already gained wide adoption as an open format that equips artificial intelligence (AI) agents with specialized knowledge and workflows for specific tasks or domains. Skills launched in October 2025, were announced as an open standard that December, and were integrated by more than 70 agent platforms in less than a year.
What Agent Skills Is and How It Works
A skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file: it teaches an agent a specific task or domain and ships with the necessary scripts and reference materials. The idea is simple: while a large language model has mastered general knowledge, it lacks the step-by-step procedural knowledge needed to perform specific professional or business tasks. A skill fills exactly that gap — it gives the agent a ready-made playbook showing how to get the job done.
Anthropic developed skills while working on Claude Code: the tool handled general-knowledge tasks well but lacked the procedural knowledge that real business tasks demand. Skills launched in October 2025 and were announced as an open standard in December 2025. Open-standard status means any agent platform can freely adopt the format — no tie-in to any company's ecosystem is required.

Scale of Adoption: More Than 70 Platforms
Since its announcement as an open standard, Agent Skills has been integrated by more than 70 agent platforms, including widely used tools like ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and VS Code. According to Anthropic, 1 million skills have been published to date and installed nearly 280 million times. The numbers show the format became the de facto language of the agent ecosystem within roughly a year: a developer writes a skill once, and it works across agents on different platforms. Importantly, this growth came not through a centralized catalog but through the open format itself — any platform could independently integrate the standard into its product. The format was announced as an open standard in December 2025 — in the ten months since, it has matured into a full ecosystem, and its governance is now moving to a neutral foundation.
What the Donation Covers
Anthropic is donating to the AAIF not only the standard itself but all surrounding assets: the Agent Skills name and logo, the GitHub organization, and the agentskills.io domain. Crucially, the standard stays open — no foundation membership is required to use it or contribute to it. For users, this means existing skills keep working and the process for writing new skills stays the same — only the standard's legal and organizational owner changes.
The standard will be maintained going forward by engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and other companies acting as individuals — that is, as independent contributors rather than corporate representatives. David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag have been appointed as lead maintainers. This governance model is standard practice for open standards: decisions are made transparently, in the community's interest.
Four New Projects Join the AAIF
According to a Linux Foundation press release, four new projects were accepted into the AAIF at once on October 22: Agent Skills from Anthropic, Open Responses from OpenAI, OpenEnv from Hugging Face, and OpenSandbox from Alibaba. Notably, the four projects were contributed by four different companies — a sign of a broad emerging industry consensus around open standards in agentic AI.
This brings the number of projects hosted by the foundation in its first year to 10. The fact that the four new projects were contributed by four different organizations — Anthropic, OpenAI, Hugging Face, and Alibaba — shows broad industry collaboration forming around open standards in agentic AI. The announcement was made on October 22–23, 2026, in San Jose at AGNTCon + MCPCon North America, an event devoted to the agentic AI and Model Context Protocol ecosystem and one of the industry's key conferences.
